This film is the third part of a stunning, gritty trilogy, originally aired on HBO as part of the "America Under Cover" series. The first two installments("Hookers at the Point", parts 1 & 2) dealt exclusively with the lives of the prostitutes. The drug addiction, violence, legal entanglements, and broken relationships associated with "the life" were throughly explored. This film is exactly what is claims to be - a look into the life of a pimp. This film accurately reflects how Pimps live. They had the gold, the cars, the 'gators, and the women. They live fast and died young. I recommend viewing all three parts of the series. As a stand alone film, "Pimps Up, Ho's Down" is a tour-de-force about the pimpin'.

Ace (Wood Harris) is a young man working in a dry cleaners in 1985 Harlem. His friend Mitch (Mekhi Phifer) sells cocaine, drives flashy cars, and has cash to burn. When Mitch goes to prison and a couple of coincidences leave Ace with a ball of cocaine in his pocket and customers waiting to buy, Ace decides to enter the drug-dealing business that he had previously shunned. He quickly rises to prominence as the cocaine kingpin of Harlem. When Mitch is released from prison, Ace brings him into the business as a partner, along with Mitch's volatile acquaintance from prison, Rico (Cam'ron). When violence erupts, Ace begins to question whether the money that his cocaine business has provided him is worth its cost.
At first look, Paid In Full seems to retread a lot of territory that has already been covered in a slew of films about inner-city drug-dealing since the 1980's. There are a couple of things that set this film apart, however, and make it worth seeing. This film emphasizes the characters' development and inner struggles more, and the trappings of the gangsta lifestyle less, than most films on the same topic. And Paid In Full is based on a true story: the story of AZ, Rich Porter, and Alpo, three young men who controlled the cocaine trade in Harlem in the mid-1980's. (Called Ace, Mitch, and Rico, respectively, in the film.) Azie Faison, who was AZ back then, cooperated with the film and wrote an early version of the screenplay. He has since criticized the film for glamorizing the gangsta lifestyle too much and not being a strong enough cautionary tale. I don't find that Paid In Full glamorizes the lifestyle all that much, but its criticism of gangsta life is not heavy-handed either. Perhaps it is better that the film did not moralize as much as it could have because that tends to alienate the audience. You will have to see it and judge for yourself.

Fred Williamson returns as Tommy Gibbs, the self-styled Godfather of Harlem in Larry Cohen's quickly made sequel to the low-budget Black Caesar. The film opens with a different perspective on the finale from the earlier film, this time with Gibbs surviving an assassination attempt with the help of his estranged father (Julius Harris), who becomes Tommy's new chief lieutenant in his rebuilt organization. Tommy takes his revenge on those who set him up but faces a new threat from within as the corrupt DA partners with an ambitious gang member to take Tommy down. It's not going to be as easy as they think. Shooting on NYC streets and locations, Cohen punches up the slim rise-and-fall/revenge story line with gritty action, a driving pace, and edgy, always-on-the-move, hand-held camera work. The production feels rushed at times and the performances don't have the energy of the previous film, but Cohen doesn't give you much time to think about it with his speeding plot and machine-gun editing, moved along nicely with help from Edwin Starr's funky score

This is one the best movies of the blaxploitation era, which strangely, didn't acquired the cult status that SUPERFLY, SHAFT & COFFY enjoy today. This movie has a great cast: a very young Paul Winfield(Gordon), Carl Lee ( Bee; who also played "Eddie" in SUPERFLY ), Gilbert Lewis ( Spanish Harry ) and a cameo role by a then very young unknown Grace Jones ( Mary ). The plot is catching: Gordon, a green beret vet from the Vietnam war returns home to find that out that his wife died victim of drugs. From that moment on, Gordon starts a war against all the pushers & drug dealers to get the dope out of Harlem. He recruits a few friends to help him stage this bloody battle against, mainly, Spanish Harry, the Big Shot of Harlem! The movie is fast paced with plenty of action and clever(70s) dialogue. Also the soundtrack is wonderful too. Songs like "Child Of Tomorrow", a beautiful sad ballad sung with deep soulness by Barbara Mason & "Come On And Dream Some Paradise",great funky music by New Birth, contributes as much to the plot as the visuals of the movie. This is an action movie with a message and a heart! I almost cried the first time I saw the ending of this movie back in 1973. Trust me on this one: GET THIS MOVIE!
